In short
- Facet-type queries often add up to more volume than the category: "women's white sneakers" is even more searched than "women's sneakers" (27,100 against 22,200 searches per month).
- A facet answers a precise intent: the visitor lands directly on the selection they were looking for, without having to filter.
- The advertising market confirms it: "grain-free cat food" costs $3.35 per click against $2.93 for "cat food".
- These long queries are also the least exposed to the AI Overview: 7% in our France study.
In most e-commerce teams, facets are seen as a technical problem: thousands of URLs to contain, a crawl budget to protect. That is true for the majority of combinations. But for a few dozen per category, the opposite is true: they are among the most profitable landing pages on the site. Here is why, in five data-backed reasons.
1. They add up to more volume than the category
Take a category and its main facets, in France:
| Query | Type | Monthly volume |
|---|---|---|
| fitted sheet | Category | 40,500 |
| 160x200 fitted sheet | Size facet | 14,800 |
| 90x190 fitted sheet | Size facet | 5,400 |
| extra deep fitted sheet | Use facet | 1,300 |
| linen fitted sheet | Material facet | 880 |

Just four facets already total 22,380 searches, more than half of the category's volume. And dozens of others exist (every size, every material, every color). Our analysis of the long tail confirms it: across all queries containing "fitted sheet", the generic term accounts for only 13% of volume.
Sometimes the facet even exceeds its category: "women's white sneakers" (27,100 searches) is more searched than "women's sneakers" (22,200). A site without a dedicated page leaves that demand to its competitors.
2. They answer a more precise intent
The user typing "extra deep fitted sheet" knows what they want. If they land on the general category, they have to find the right filter, apply it, and browse products that do not suit them. If they land on the facet, they see the right selection immediately.
Every step removed between the search and the product reduces drop-offs. It is the same mechanism that explains the conversion gap between a visit to an article and a visit to a category, detailed in our analysis of e-commerce SEO traffic: the more closely the page matches the demand, the better the visit converts.
3. The advertising market assigns them as much value, if not more
CPC is the price advertisers are willing to pay for a click. Across several categories, the facet costs more than the category:
| Category | CPC | Facet | CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| cat food | $2.93 | grain-free cat food | $3.35 |
| fitted sheet | $0.98 | extra deep fitted sheet | $1.38 |
| fitted sheet | $0.98 | linen fitted sheet | $1.07 |
| long dress | $0.36 | black long dress | $0.42 |
| women's sneakers | $0.38 | women's white sneakers | $0.45 |

Advertisers measure their sales down to the cent. If they pay more for these clicks, it is because they convert at least as well. It is not systematic ("compact stroller" costs less than "stroller"), but the trend is clear on attributes that express a precise need.
4. They are less contested
Big players concentrate their SEO efforts on main categories. On precise combinations, many sites simply have no dedicated page, or a page with generic tags. A site that seriously optimizes its facets finds competition there that is far easier to beat than at the top of the category.
5. They escape the AI Overview more often
Since July 2026, the AI Overview has been answering some searches directly in France. In our study of 599 French e-commerce queries, it appears on 14% of one- or two-word transactional queries, but only 7% of transactional queries of three words or more, the typical form of facets. On those searches, Google mainly shows products and links to stores.
What it takes to benefit from them
Facets only pay off if they are treated as real pages:
- Index the right combinations, the ones with demand, and block the others: see our guide to faceted navigation.
- Give them their own tags and copy, centered on their attribute: see how to optimize a facet page.
- Link them from the parent category.
The bottleneck is almost always the same: the volume of work. A few dozen facets per category, multiplied by dozens of categories, means hundreds of pages to write. That is precisely what unblind automates, by recognizing facets as a page type of their own, carrying their attribute into the title tag and writing, for each one, copy anchored in its products, reviewed and verified.
Frequently asked questions
Can a facet page bring in more than a category?
Individually, rarely. Collectively, often: the sum of a category's facet-type queries frequently exceeds the category's own volume, with more precise purchase intent. Some facets, such as "women's white sneakers", are even more searched than their parent category.
How many facets should be indexed?
As many as there are combinations with real demand and enough products, no more. On a large category, that often means a few dozen facets, rarely hundreds.
