Google Merchant Center and free listings: the SEO channel many e-commerce merchants forget

On buying queries, Google displays product modules in the vast majority of cases. Merchant Center free listings let you appear there without paying. How to take advantage of them, and why they complement your category pages.

In short

  • In our study of 599 French queries, Google displayed a product module on 94% of transactional queries.
  • Google Merchant Center free listings let you appear in these modules, the Shopping tab, Images or Lens, without paying per click.
  • They are enabled by default in most accounts: you still need a complete, high-quality product feed.
  • Free listings and category pages complement each other: the former for specific product searches, the latter for selection searches.

When we talk about e-commerce SEO, we think of classic results: ten blue links. On buying queries, however, the results page is often dominated by something else: product modules, with photos and prices. Appearing there does not necessarily require paying.

Product modules almost everywhere

In our study of 599 French e-commerce queries, Google displayed a product module on 94% of transactional queries, and 72% of commercial queries. On "160x200 fitted sheet" or "food for neutered cats", the visitor sees products before even seeing the classic results.

Merchant Center free listings

Google lets merchants display their products for free across several surfaces: Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube and even Gemini, depending on country and format. This is what Google calls free listings.

They rely on a Google Merchant Center account and a product feed. In most cases, the feature is enabled by default. What makes the difference is feed quality.

What matters in the feed

  • Precise product titles: brand, model, main feature, size or color. A product's title in the feed plays the same role as a page's title tag.
  • Useful, factual descriptions, with no promotional text.
  • All required and recommended attributes: identifiers (GTIN), product category, condition, color, size, material.
  • Up-to-date prices and availability, consistent with the product page.
  • High-quality images, on a neutral background for the main image.
  • Flagged products fixed: the 'Needs attention' tab in Merchant Center lists the ones with issues.

Free listings and categories: two complementary roles

Search What the visitor wants What captures the click
"Riviera percale 160x200 white fitted sheet" A specific product The product page, and the free listing in the product module
"160x200 linen fitted sheet" A selection The facet page, in classic results and alongside the module
"fitted sheet" Exploring the offer The category page

Free listings do not replace your categories: they highlight individual products. On selection searches, visitors who want to compare several models often click through to a category or facet page. The two channels reinforce each other.

Where to start

  1. Create or check your Merchant Center account and the status of free listings.
  2. Audit your feed: missing attributes, disapproved products, poor titles.
  3. Align feed and pages: consistent prices, availability and titles.
  4. Optimize your categories and facets in parallel, which capture selection searches. This is the part unblind automates, with our method for optimizing a category page.
