SEO click-through rate in e-commerce: gaining traffic without gaining rankings

At the same ranking position, a better click-through rate means free extra traffic. How to measure your organic CTR, what makes it drop (AI Overview, product modules, rewrites), and the levers that make it rise.

In short

  • Organic click-through rate (CTR) is the share of impressions that turn into clicks: at the same position, improving it brings traffic without any ranking gain.
  • It drops when an AI Overview is displayed: Ahrefs measures -58% for the first position on the queries concerned.
  • The levers that depend on you: a title tag that reflects the query, a meta description that describes the offer, and tags Google does not rewrite.
  • Measure it at comparable positions, in batches of pages, in Google Search Console.

In SEO, people talk a lot about rankings and little about click-through rate. Yet, between two pages in fourth position on the same query, the one that gets twice as many clicks receives twice as much traffic. Click-through rate is the fastest lever in e-commerce SEO, because it acts on pages that are already visible.

What organic CTR is

Click-through rate, or CTR, is the ratio between clicks and impressions for a page in Google's results. Google Search Console reports it by page, by query and by period.

It depends on three things:

  • position: the higher the page, the more it gets clicked;
  • the results page: AI Overview, product module, videos, related questions take up space and clicks;
  • your own result: the title tag and snippet displayed.

You do not control the first two. You do control the third.

What makes CTR drop

The AI Overview

When an AI Overview is displayed, clicks to classic results fall: Ahrefs measures a 58% drop in the click-through rate of the first position across 300,000 keywords, and Seer Interactive an organic CTR of 2.36% with an AI Overview versus 3.82% without. Good news for categories: in our France study, the AI Overview affects only 9% of transactional queries.

Google's rewrites

Google modifies a large share of displayed title tags: 76% in a Search Engine Land study on the first quarter of 2025. A rewritten title tag is no longer the text you chose to trigger the click.

Generic tags

"Fitted sheets | My Store", repeated across dozens of pages, gives no reason to click on you rather than elsewhere.

The levers that raise CTR

  1. A title tag that reflects the exact query, first, with a concrete characteristic of the offer. See our method for title tags.
  2. A meta description that describes what the visitor will find (brands, materials, ranges) and gives a reason to choose your site. See our meta description guide.
  3. Tags Google does not need to rewrite: controlled length, no repetition, consistency with the H1.
  4. Suitable structured data on product pages (price, availability, reviews), which enriches the display.

Measuring without fooling yourself

CTR varies with position: a page that gains two places sees its CTR rise mechanically. To measure the effect of a tag rewrite:

  • compare CTR at comparable positions, before and after;
  • work in batches of similar pages, with a control batch;
  • wait four to six weeks, and check that Google is indeed displaying the new tags.

Where the opportunity lies

CTR pays off most on pages that already have many impressions: your categories and facets ranking on the first or second page. In Search Console, identify those that have many impressions and a low CTR for their position: they are your priorities.

On a catalog, these pages often number in the hundreds. unblind rewrites their title tags and meta descriptions according to precise rules (query first, no service promise in the title tag, no vague formula, meta around 150 characters), and can publish them directly to Shopify in batches, which makes before-and-after measurement easier.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good click-through rate in SEO?

There is no universal rate: CTR depends on position, query type and the modules displayed (AI Overview, products, videos). Instead, compare your pages with each other, at the same position, and track the evolution of the same page after a change.

How can I improve the CTR of a category page?

Rewrite its title tag so it reflects the exact query and a concrete characteristic of the offer, and its meta description so it describes what the visitor will find and gives them a reason to choose your site. Then check in the results that Google is indeed displaying your new tags.
